In the US, 15% is the minimum for acceptable service, 18–20% is standard for good service, and 20–25% is for excellent service. In Canada, 15–18% is typical. In the UK, 10–12.5% is common. Australia and New Zealand have no strong tipping culture.

Tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically correct and slightly kinder to your wallet. Most people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity. Either is acceptable — the difference on a typical restaurant bill is small.

Many restaurants automatically add a gratuity of 18–20% for groups of 6 or more — check your bill before adding more. If no gratuity is included, 18–20% split evenly among the group is standard.
