How to use this calculator

  1. Select your country — statutory minimums and guidance will update to match your employment law.
  2. Enter the date you plan to hand in your resignation. This can be today or a future date.
  3. Enter your notice period length — check your employment contract. Use the statutory minimum shown if your contract doesn't specify.
  4. Choose whether your notice is counted in working days or calendar days, and whether it starts the same day or the day after you resign.

Statutory Minimum Notice Periods by Country

These are the legal minimums. Your contract may require more — always check.

Country Minimum Notice Notes
🇬🇧 UK 1 week (after 1 month) Rises 1 week per year of service, max 12 weeks. Contract may specify more.
🇺🇸 US None (at-will) No federal minimum. Check your contract — 2 weeks is conventional for most roles.
🇨🇦 Canada 1–8 weeks Varies by province and length of service. Ontario: 1 week per year, max 8 weeks.
🇦🇺 Australia 1–4 weeks Under NES: 1 week (<1yr), 2 weeks (1–3yrs), 3 weeks (3–5yrs), 4 weeks (5+yrs). +1 week if over 45.
🇮🇪 Ireland 1–8 weeks Under Minimum Notice Act: scales with service from 1 week (13 weeks+) to 8 weeks (15yrs+).
🇳🇿 New Zealand Notice per contract No statutory minimum for resignation. Employment agreement must specify; typically 2–4 weeks.
